“We’ve a standard table. Will a 43cm seat feel too low at it?”

Two Whitney chairs come in the box, in natural elm, from our showroom in Ballincollig, Co. Cork; every figure below is for one chair. Most dining chairs sit somewhere between 45 and 48cm, so it’s a reasonable question. Under a typical 75cm table, the Whitney’s 43cm seat leaves about 32cm between you and the tabletop, a few centimetres more than the usual 25–30cm guide. In practice that’s room to cross your legs, and it suits a table with a deep rail under the top. If your table is lower, around 70cm, the gap closes to about 27cm. It all comes down to your own table, so measure it from the floor to the top.

Room to pull a chair out

Each chair is 53cm wide, inside the 60cm of table edge most people like. Leave around 90cm behind every chair so it can come out without hitting the wall.

The first few weeks

Elm is a natural timber and moves a touch as the heating comes on; that’s normal and settles. The seat is woven paper cord, so keep it away from soaking: a damp cloth for spills, then let it dry. If a chair rocks slightly on an uneven floor, a felt pad under one foot sorts it.

They’re also light, about 14kg packed for the two, so when the talk moves to the sitting room you can carry a chair in after it rather than leaving someone standing.

Allow around four weeks. Delivered across Cork and nationwide, or collected from the showroom in Ballincollig at no charge. We’ll confirm your delivery date before you pay.

Why natural rather than black? Natural elm keeps a pale room pale and lets the weave show. Black is sharper. Same chair either way.

What table goes with them? Almost any timber or painted top; have a look through our dining tables.
