Two Manford stools in light grey fabric, sold together; the dimensions below are for one. They’re counter stools from the Manford range, a shaped back and curved seat on metal legs, and they belong at an island or peninsula in the kitchen, which in a lot of houses is where people end up whatever the size of the sitting room. The room people actually use

Somebody’s doing the dinner, somebody else is doing the talking, a teenager is at the end of the counter eating crisps out of the bag and nobody is in the good room. A stool at the counter turns watching into joining in. Light grey is the easy colour here: it sits with white or grey units, pale oak and stone-coloured worktops, and doesn’t argue with whatever else is going on.

Measure the counter first

Kitchen counters usually stand around 90cm high, which leaves about 25cm between this seat and the worktop: the gap you want. Bar-height counters, 100–110cm, need a taller stool. Allow around 60cm of counter per stool so nobody is knocking elbows.

How many do I get?
Two stools. The measurements are for one.

Is the grey warm or cool?
It reads as a soft, light grey in the photos, but screens vary. If it has to sit beside something exact, bring a sample in and we’ll compare it with the Manford grey for you.

Will a fabric seat mark?
Any light fabric shows a spill that’s left to sit, so blot it quickly. If the stools will take heavy daily use, the brown faux leather Manford may be easier to live with.
