Three to a bench, on turned spindle legs in Meteor.

Thursday, and three children on one bench is a different animal to three children on three chairs. They slide along, someone gets squashed, someone complains, and nobody moves an inch because moving means missing something. The plates go round; the bench holds the lot of them.

The bench

The Eton Dining Bench in Meteor, one of the benches we sell in Ballincollig, is 150cm long and seats three, with a solid oak underframe, a grooved seat and turned spindle-style legs in a matte lacquer and matte paint finish. Farmhouse in feel, it’s at home along the wall side of a table where chairs would crowd.

Size

At 150cm, three people get about 50cm each, which is snug, and that’s how benches work. Put it along a table at least as long, and check the space between your table’s legs before counting on it sliding underneath.

What it sits with

The Eton Extending Dining Table shares the turned legs, the Eton Trestle Dining Table Meteor shares the finish, and a pair or two of the Eton Dining Chair (Set of 2) on the other side keeps it from looking like a canteen. Seat pads soften it, if bare timber isn’t for you.

Judging the length

Getting it to the house

Allow around four weeks. Delivered across Cork and nationwide, or collected from the showroom in Ballincollig at no charge. We’ll confirm your delivery date before you pay.

Two questions

Will three adults fit?
The listing says three. At 50cm each, three adults will be friendly; two adults with room to spare, or three children, is roomier.

Does it have a back?
No. It’s a plain bench, 45cm high, so you can step over it to sit down and push it aside when it isn’t needed.
